In Support Of Our Youth, We Have Selected A Poem From Nanci Cosby

When you look in my eyes, you probably don't see,

The painful past of my history.

Straight "A student, skipping class.

Preacher's daughter, smoking grass.

Family trying everything to help me see.

But I was a stranger; this person wasn't me.

I was so unhappy, my heart was broke.

So I started filling my head with coke.

I convinced myself this was who I was,

Never going a day without getting a buzz.

I moved back home to compromise,

Promising things that were nothing but lies.

Two years later, I turned eighteen.

I was a little better, but still not clean.

I quit the coke, slowed down on pot;

but took up alcohol and was drunk a lot.

I got a car, nice and new;

But like my dreams I lost it too.

Had too much to drink and chose to drive;

Because I was selfish a man had to die.

Praying to God to help me get through.

Constantly asking "What Do I Do".

I was tired to losing in the battle of life;

Tired of problems and all the strife.

I wanted to live and love each day.

So I said to God "Show Me The Way!".

I started praying and reading his word,

And sure enough my life took a turn.

I no longer needed the drugs and the beer;

For once in my life things were clear.

I love myself for who I am;

And choose a new life by the blood of the Lamb.

So when you look in my eyes which one do your see,

The painful past I left, or my Victory?
